SSL and Secure Sites

SSL and Secure Sites
An SSL secure site allows your web surfers to have encrypted secure access to portions of your web site.  This is most commonly used for shopping cart purchases.

There are two types of secure certificates. There is a private one that you may purchase from any of the authorized certificate companies, or there is a shared one that you may use for free that is included with your hosting account.

We provide a free server-wide shared certificate available for your use if you do not want to purchase a certificate in your own company name:

The address for the free shared certificate is:
https://SturdyLinkHosting.com/~username/folder/file

For example, https://SturdyLinkHosting.com/~tomcat/shopping/cart.html... would access a page called "cart.html" in a subfolder called "shopping" for domain whose username is "tomcat".

NOTE:
Your user name is the name you use to login to your hosting control panel.

If you want to create a PRIVATE secure certificate for your own site, here are the steps you need to follow:

1) Send us an email to request purchase of a private certificate.  We offer them at a big discount to the prices you will pay if you go to the vendor directly.
2) We will purchase the certificate for you and send you the key information.
3) You enter the key information into your certificate.
4) Make and save a back-up copy of the CSR and Key (and key decryption password)

For accounts with your own certificate:

Call the file from within your html pages, scripts or browser using:
https://yourdomain.com/file.html

To call file in personal cgi-bin:
https://yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/file.html
